In 2009 I became pregnant with my first daughter and decided to leave the teaching world and become a stay at home mom. Because I became pregnant and moved right at the end of the school year, I needed something to keep me occupied until my daughter was born. So I began making crafts for her. I learned the crafting basics – sewing, knitting, etc. – from my grandmother, and had dabbled in other crafts as I came across them, such as jewelry making. Whenever I came across something I liked, whether it was at a craft fair or on a favorite blog or craft site, I always thought, “I can make that- and for cheap!” I decided to start a blog to share my creations with anyone who cared to see them, and was surprised that people – even strangers – actually liked some of the things I was making. My husband came up with the name Binge Crafter, which I think appropriately described the kind of crafter I am. I love learning and trying new things.
With the encouragement of some fellow crafters, I decided to open an Etsy shop in 2012. “Wouldn’t it be nice,” I thought, “if I could at least make enough to support my binge crafting habit?” Well, it took a few months for my shop to get going, but in only a few months I had made more than I was spending on crafts in a year, and in less than a year I was making enough that I needed it to go from being a hobby to a legitimate business. Now, three years later, I am hoping to expand my business more independently, so here we are.
One of the things I have learned through selling on Etsy is that people love customized items. Being a binge crafter, I absolutely love doing custom work! Nothing excites me more than when a customer comes to me with a unique baby shower theme and asks me to create new iron-on applique shapes for a baby shower onesie making station, or when a customer sends photos of their baby’s first birthday outfit and asks me to make a party hat to match. I love trying to make new things, so please don’t hesitate to ask!
